My New Year’s resolution for this year is a bit different; no dieting, no cutting back on the drinking, or cussing – or any other of those normal human faults. Instead I am going to try to become more involved politically – because I fear for the fate of my country.
The following quotation has been attributed to several people, most prominently to Andrew Tyler, Alexis de Tocqueville or H. W. Prentis.
“The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
From spiritual faith to great courage;
From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to selfishness;
From selfishness to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.”
I have asked myself three questions about the above quote:
1. Is it likely true?
2. If so, where are we in the cycle?
3. What can I do about it?
Every American should ask themselves those three questions and come up with their own soul searching answer.
My answers were:
1. Yes, I really believe that the statements are essentially true.
2. The scary part – it appears to me we are leaving the apathy stage and entering the dependence stage.
3. This is my first step – and I will take others as well.
I know that I am not alone in my beliefs – there are others. We were once called the silent majority. If you do not agree with my answers, please enlighten me as to where I am wrong – I would love to be wrong – being right is damned frightening.
I urge you to join me in doing what you can to avoid the final stage. Let us no longer be silent – and let us pray that we are still a majority.
Next week I will be back at my trading desk.
